Pivot Interactives Integration with Canvas
Overview
Pivot Interactives provides over 550 interactive video-based activities for all science subjects, including Biology, Earth & Space Science, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Physics. This platform can be integrated with your Canvas course seamlessly. Instructors can create assignments in Canvas that link directly to assignments in Pivot Interactives. This means:
Students can click the assignment in Canvas to launch Pivot Interactives assignments.
Students can link their Canvas account to a Pivot Interactives account to automatically authenticate into Pivot Interactives when they click an assignment in Canvas.
Students' grades on Pivot Interactives assignments automatically connect to their Canvas grade book.
This instruction will guide you on how to integrate Pivot Interactives into your Canvas course.
Linking a Pivot Interactives Assignment to a Canvas Course
Linked assignments can be opened either in Canvas or in Pivot Interactives. All grades in Pivot Interactives are reported to Canvas.
Find Activities in Pivot Interactives
Log into Pivot Interactives.
Use the search tools and category filters to find the right activity for you and your students.
When you find an activity that you'd like to preview, click Preview or click the thumbnail image.
ClickCopy to Library.
Select the library you'd like the activity to be placed in from the dropdown menu and then click Copy Activity.
Once the activity is in your library, you can edit it.
Assign an activity to the class connected to the Canvas course
Before you can assign the activity to your students, you need to create a class. You can assign activities to the class before students join.
Click My Classes [1], then the class name.
Click + Assign an Activity [2].
Click My Libraries [3] and select the library containing the activity you wish to assign.
Click Assign [4] below the activity description.
Select the class [1] you'd like to assign the activity to.
Set the Start Date and Due Date [2].
Set the First Visible Date and Last Visible Date [3].
Choose who to assign the activity to within the class you've previously selected [4].
Click Assign [5] to complete assigning the activity.
Create a linked assignment in Canvas
In Canvas, log in as an instructor to your course.
Click Assignments and +Assignment.
Scroll to Submission Type and select External Tool.
Click Find, and scroll through the list and click Embed Pivot Interactives, and click Select.
If you haven't created an assignment for any Canvas course before, you'll be prompted to log into Pivot Interactives to link your Pivot Interactives account with your Canvas account.
If you haven't created an assignment for this Canvas course before, you'll be prompted to select which Pivot Interactive class assignments you are linking to this Canvas course from.
Once you select a Pivot Interactives class, scroll through the assignments currently available for that class, and click to select the one you want to assign.
Scroll to the bottom of the list and click Connect Assignment.
Complete the rest of the fields in Canvas, such as due date and then press Save and Publish.
The assignment is now added to your list of Canvas assignments.
When creating an assignment in Canvas for use on iPad, make sure to configure the Canvas assignment to Load This Tool In A New Tab.
Students connecting Canvas account to Pivot Interactives account
When students click a Pivot Interactives assignment in Canvas here's what happens:
If the student has never logged into Pivot Interactives before, they will be prompted to login, or signup for a new Pivot Interactives account. Students should select signup and enter a their name and email. This will create a Pivot Interactives account that is linked to their Canvas account. It will also add the student to the roster for the connected Pivot Interactives class.
After the first time students connect their Canvas account to their Pivot Interactives account, clicking a linked assignment in Canvas will route the student directly to the assigned activity.
