NPST Typhon: Case & Time Logs

DNP students in clinical NP and CNS courses listed below are expected to accurately Log Cases and Clinical Hours every day they are in a clinical setting or performing simulations. This is required to ensure that Typhon records accurately portray the student's experiences and that the correct number of clinical hours have been documented for the student's program track.

Resources

The following video was recorded as an introduction to Case and Time Log expectations and includes helpful information for all clinical and DNP project courses:

Typhon Overview Video

  • For any Typhon account related questions, please email SHS@spu.edu.
  • For case log/time log identification, please reach out to your professor.

1) Add a Case Log

Logging direct care clinical hours will begin by logging a Case Log as you will be expected to enter a case log for each patient you see.

If you are logging a indirect experience, such as in Simulation, do not enter any Case Log information.  Your instructor will give you more information about how to log that experience.

NEVER include identifying information about patients in your submitted Typhon log OR any notes you take.

Default Choices for Logs

If you would like to set defaults for your logs use the “Setup Default Choices” option under Information & Setup.

These items will be automatically selected when you create a new log, however you can override or change your choices at any time.  It is suggested that you update your default choices at the beginning of every quarter.

2) Enter patient information.

Marked fields are required.

Case Log Reports

All of the information entered in case logs can be accessed by running reports and may be helpful data for seeking employment, after graduation.

3) Enter time under Time with Patient in each Case Log.

Do not enter time under "Consult with Preceptor".  Instead, include any time discussing a specific patient with a preceptor as part of “Time with Patient”.

4) Add a Time Log

Time Logs must be completed for every day you accrue clinical hours of any kind.

The time you enter under Case Logs will be available for you to view, as you complete your time log for a specific date.

5) Enter Date, Course, Site, and Preceptor

You MUST select your preceptor and site for direct care hours in Practicum & Immersion.

DO NOT select a preceptor or site for simulation experiences or indirect hours outside of Practicum or Immersion.

6) Enter Total Shift Time and by time by Category

  1. Click “Display patient, consult & conference time” to display time from all Case Logs for the selected date.
  2. Use “Patient Time” to manually add the total direct care for the day under DNP Practicum (Direct).
  3. Enter all time under the appropriate category, according to the guide below. In some quarters this may be a mix of DNP Practicum (Direct)  and DNP Indirect, such as in NUR 7930/7934 Simulation & Field Experience or NUR 7938 Immersion Practicum.
  4. Manually enter your grand total time for the day under “Total Shift Time”. The “Total Allocated Time” is an automatically generated sum of all time entered for the day which you can copy into “Total Shift Time”.
  5. Enter notes about what you did during the hours logged.
