Overview

It is important for Professors to stay on top of the content they are willing to share with students in their courses. Many find it helpful to know how to make everything available to their students at once while others prefer making individual content visible at different times. Canvas offers both of these options as well as a third option of publishing assignments but, locking them until a specific date. Below we will show how to make each of these options possible.

Making the Course Available

Instructors tend to quickly learn how to create assignments, modules, etc. But, they forget to make this content available to students. Below are instructions as to how to make content available to students:

  1. Go to the main course screen homepage.
  2. Click on the "Publish" cloud, located towards the top right corner of the Canvas screen called "Course Status".

Making Individual Content Available:

Sometimes instructors do not wish to make all the content in a course available at once.

To make certain assignments, modules, etc. available and keep the rest of the content hidden:

  1. Go to the content page (Assignments, modules, etc)
  2. Click on the "Publish" cloud located towards the right side of the screen. (This gray cloud should turn green)

Note: If content is not "Published", students are unable to view this uploaded content.

Locking Assignments:

Locking assignments until a specific date is useful for instructors who do not have time or do not want to setup reminders to publish assignments at a specific time yet, want to make all assignments beforehand while keeping students from getting ahead and submitting to these assignments.

To "Lock" Assignments:

  1. Create the assignment (Or, "Edit" the assignment)
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the assignment editing screen to the "Assign box" and enter an "Available from" date (this will be the date in the future).
  3. Enter other assignment details.
  4. Save the assignment.
  5. Publish the assignment.

Visibility

The purpose of locking assignments, in Canvas, was created with the intention to keep students from submitting assignments that were not assigned yet. These feature was not created with the intention of not allowing students to view such assignment details such as directions to complete the assignments or other assignment descriptions. Though it doesn't allow students to view the date or the points possible, they can view the title and description of the assignment.
