  2. Click on the Recover Deleted Items button in the Outlook menu.

In Webmail:

  1. Right-click the Deleted Items folder in the pane on the left side of the window.
  2. Choose the Recover Deleted Items option in the menu that appears

If you do not see the Recover Deleted Items option when you right-click, you may have selected the Favorites version, which is similar to a short-cut. Look for the Deleted Items folder listed underneath your Last Name, First Name header.

About the Recover Deleted Items feature

Messages that are deleted from the mailbox or any mailbox sub-folder immediately go to the Deleted Items folder. Any message that is contained within the mailbox Deleted Items folder can be retrieved at any time and moved back into any normal mailbox folder. Items may be manually removed from the deleted items folder at any time (empty the trash). Items that have been deleted for more than 30 days will be removed from the deleted items folder and permanently deleted.

After items are removed from the Deleted Items folder, whether by the automatic process or by manual deletion, these items are moved to a server-based holding folder. This holding folder can be accessed by using Recover Deleted Items. This is the second stage of the deletion process and provides a safety net if an important message or folder is accidentally permanently deleted. Items are kept in this server-based folder for approximately 60 days from when they were originally removed from the Deleted Items folder.

Summary of Email Deletion Process

The follow steps outline the process that email messages follow when they are deleted.

  1. A mailbox item starts out in the Inbox or one of the Sub-folders of the inbox.
  2. The item is deleted from its location in the Inbox or Sub-folder, and is moved to the Deleted Items folder.
  3. The Deleted Items folder is periodically emptied into the Holding folder.
  4. Items in the Holding folder can be restored up to 60 days after deletion through use of the Recover Deleted Items interface.

Do not store important messages or attachments in the Deleted Items folder or in the Holding folder as they will eventually be permanently deleted. CIS is unable to assist with recovery of items that have been purged from the Holding folder after the 60-day window.
