If Outlook does not seem to be working correctly the Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe) can diagnose and repair errors in the outlook file. The tool determines whether the file structure is intact. If it is not intact, the Inbox Repair tool resets your file structure and rebuilds the headers.

This process will not require you to re-download your Outlook inbox.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Exit Outlook and Lync if either are running.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\OFFICE(number) and double-click Scanpst.exe,
  3. Click Start

    1. If the Enter the name of the file you want to scan box is empty, click Browse and navigate to C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ and select the appropriate email address
  4. If errors are found after the scan is complete, you will be prompted to start the repair process to fix the errors.
  5. A backup file is created during the repair process. To change the default name or location of this backup file, in the Enter name of backup file box, enter a new name, or click Browse to look for the file that you want to use.
  6. Click Repair
  7. Once the repair is finished, open Outlook and determine if the problem was solved.
    1. If the problem persists, consider doing an Office Repair
