If users are unable to take advantage of the simultaneous file editing feature of SharePoint, it is likely that they are not using the most recent file extensions (.xlsx, .docx, .pptx, etc.).
Step-by-step guide
- Check the file type of the offending document to see if it using the .doc, .ppt, or .xls file extensions
- If it is of one of these types, download the file and open it with Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
- Select the option to "Save As" and select the updated file type (.xlsx, .docx, .pptx, etc.).
- Upload the new document to SharePoint in the same location as the old file.
- Delete the old file, as the files will be named differently due to the new file extension.
