Overview

Microsoft Teams and Forms are tools that help you create and use online polls. This instruction will guide you in using these two digital tools to gather feedback. Below are essential features that support both in-person and online teaching and learning environments.

Some Ideas for Using Online Polling in Teaching:

  1. Icebreaker: Encourages participation and helps build a sense of connection among attendees from the start.​
  2. Discussion Starter: Encourages participation, sparks conversation or setting the stage for deeper conversations. ​
  3. Knowledge Check: A quick way to assess prior knowledge, clarify misconceptions, and identify the muddiest points for learning.​
  4. A Quick Survey and Q&A: Gathering common questions or informal student feedback on learning experience​

Access Microsoft Teams

Teams is free to all SPU users and is included in SPU's Office 365 license. You can download Microsoft Teams to your laptop following the steps:

  • Go to Teams Download to download Teams for your laptop.
  • Sign in with your SPU credentials.

How to create polls using Teams

  • Go to your Teams channel or a chat you want to send the poll.
  • Click the "More apps" button [1].
  • Search "Polls" [2].

  • Click the app of Polls.
  • Add your question and answer options.

  • If you want to allow multiple answers, click or tap the toggle next to Multiple selections. Also select whether you want to record names of respondents and/or share aggregated results with respondents.

  • Click "Preview" button.
  • Preview your poll, and then click Edit if you want to make changes, or click Send if you're ready to post it.

  • You can see the result from the Teams channel or chat.

Create Polls via Microsoft Forms

in Canvas

Microsoft Forms is a web-based application that allows SPU Staff, Faculty and Students to easily create online surveys and polls. All forms are mobile friendly and do not require the end user to download software.

Access Microsoft Forms

  • Go to Office.com and sign in with your SPU credentials. Search for Forms, and click the app.
  • Select  New Form or New Quiz or a for a standard form (Polls/Survey), or New Quiz if you'd like it to be graded. Alternatively, you can choose a template.

  • Type a title for your form. You can also provide an optional description.

  • Optional: Select style [1] to create a color scheme or a theme.

  • Select Add new to add a question.

  • Choose an option as you needed:   Choice, Text, Rating, or Date questions or select the drop-down list to see and choose one of these options:  Ranking, Likert, File upload, Net Promoter Score, and Section.

  • Select You can preview what this form will look like on the client's end by clicking Preview [2] on the ribbon.

  • Select Computer or Mobile.

  • SelectClick Back to continue editing your form.

  • After you've complete completed your form /or quiz, you can go to Settings [3] to choose who have has permission to access this form/quizit and how you want people to respond.

Get Embedded Code for Canvas

Share the Form with others

You can share this form with others by sending a link, an invitation, a QR code, or by embedding it.

Click Collect responses [4] on the ribbon.

  • Click "Copy Link" to get the Form's link.

  • You can share this form by pasting the link in an email, Teams, Canvas, or any other platform you use.

By Invitation

  • Click Invitation [1].
  • You can edit the invitation message before sending it.
  • Select Outlook or Teams as the platform you’d like to send this form through.
  • Click Send [2].

By QR Code

  • Click QR Code button.
  • Click Download.
  • You can insert this QR code in a presentation slide, email, Teams, or a Canvas page.

By Embedding

  • Go to Embed code [1] and click Copy [2].

  • This code will be pasted into Canvas.

Embed Microsoft Forms in Canvas

  • Login SPU Canvas.
  • Navigate to the course you want to embed the Microsoft Forms.
  • You can embed Microsoft Form in Rich Content Editor, such as Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, or Pages.
  • In the RCE, click Insert from the toolbar and click Embed.

  • Copy and paste your form/quiz embed code to the box. And click Submit.

Check responses

  • Go back to your Microsoft Forms. Office.com and then select Forms.
  • Go to the form/quiz you want to check responses.
  • Click Responses [5] on the ribbon. 
  • You can either view the results on the webpage or download them as a spreadsheet to open in Excel.
