Overview

Profile Pictures in Canvas are one of the features that cannot can be customized due to SPU policy. In this page, we will describe the reason behind this restriction as well as what steps to take if you do not want your institutional ID photo shown in Canvas.

Profile Pictures

Student identification information is regularly updated in Canvas from the records kept in Banner, so any changes made to a profile in Canvas are temporary and will be wiped out with 12-24 hours when Canvas and Banner resync.

Banner uses the images taken at Campus Card Services. This picture is also used for all other accounts related to SPU credentials for consistency in case of an emergency, etc. If you do not wish to have this photo displayed in Canvas, you can change your privacy settings in :

  1. Go to "Personal Menu".
  2. Click on "Privacy Settings".
  3. In the "Photograph" column, check mark "Public", "SPU Only", or double click to get rid of both check-marks so that neither option is selected. This makes it so that there is no image for your SPU online credentials.
  4. Click "Submit"
You can also purchase a new SeaPac Pass if you wish to have your photo retaken

.  By default, the picture taken on your SPU Falcon card will be sent to the Banner Info System and then populated into Canvas.  There is also an online photo submission method available too,  this is particularly convenient for students who cannot come to campus.  There are privacy settings you can change in the Banner Info System to prevent this picture from being shared with other SPU's systems. Alternatively, in Canvas, you may upload a custom profile picture.

Tip
Uploading a picture in Canvas will not change the picture used in other SPU systems.
