Doctoral students take two comprehensive exams covering foundations and research coursework. Traditional, closed-book comprehensive exams are held once a month, on set Fridays. Take-home, open-book exams will be offered once per academic quarter. Direct any questions to Megan Hamshar at mego@spu.edu.


Closed-book Comprehensive Exams
Traditional, proctored exams are held once a month, on set Fridays. Exams will be held online via Zoom for the remainder of 2020. Zoom exams take place from 9:00am-1:00pm and will utilize a stagger start for multiple test-takers.

Reminders are sent out one week prior to the exam. Deadline to sign up is one week in advance of the exam, and cancellations must be received at least four days in advance. Email Megan Hamshar to cancel.


Open-book Comprehensive Exams
NEW! Take-home, open-book exams will be offered once per academic quarter on the following dates: First Monday of October; First Monday of February; First Monday of May; First Monday of July.

Examinees have 4 weeks to complete the exam and must sign up for the exam at least one week in advance of the next exam date. Examinees will obtain a copy of the exam from Megan Hamshar, Associate Director of Graduate Programs, on the scheduled exam date.

Cancellations must be received in writing at least four days prior to the exam date. Email Megan Hamshar to cancel. Students may not cancel or withdraw once the exam has been distributed. Inability to submit a distributed exam will result in a non-passing grade.
