5.1 Bereavement Time Off

Staff that accrue sick leave: Up to five days of sick pay may be taken upon the death of the employee's spouse, parent, father-in-law, mother-in-law, child, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law. This time off must be requested and approved via an Absence request.

Faculty and other benefitted staff that do not accrue leave: Up to five days may be taken upon the death of the employee's spouse, parent, father-in-law, mother-in-law, child, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law. This time off is paid by SPU and must be requested and approved by via an Absence request.

To request bereavement time off

  • Start on your employee profile  

  • Click on Absence 

  • Manage Absence 

  • Enter dates on the calendar 

  • Click on Request Absence 

  • Under Types of Absence choose Other Time Off 

  • Choose Bereavement 

  • Enter any comments needed and then submit request
