2.3 Safety and Security

Policies regarding campus safety and security are posted on the Office of Safety and Security website, including in the University’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. All employees are encouraged to review these policies. Policies that are particularly important for employees to know include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Reporting Accidents, Emergencies, and Crimes: All accidents, emergencies, and crimes (including thefts) occurring on campus should be reported immediately to the Office of Safety and Security by calling (206) 281-2911.

  • Keys: Keys to offices and buildings necessary for employee access are issued by the Office of Safety and Security. A refundable deposit may be required and authorization for issuing keys must be given by the department/school director. On their final day on campus, terminating employees are required to return all keys to the Office of Safety and Security.

  • Alarm Codes: If an office is equipped with an alarm, alarm access codes will be issued by the Office of Safety and Security. Codes must be kept confidential.

  • After Hours Access: For individuals without keys, use of facilities after hours must be authorized by the appropriate departmental administrator. A written memo stating such and signed by the administrator must be sent to the Office of Safety and Security in advance. Personnel who are in a building after security officers lock the building must confirm that facilities they are using are closed and locked when they leave.

  • Access During Hours of Operation: All faculty and staff are expected to take precautions to promote security of buildings and equipment during regular operating hours. Offices and rooms where equipment or supplies are stored should be kept locked when not occupied.

  • Emergency Drills and Procedures: All employees are expected to participate in campus emergency drills and to know and follow campus emergency procedures.

  • Parking: Parking of automobiles on campus lots is by permit only during the academic year. All employees must register their automobiles with the Office of Safety and Security regardless if they purchase a parking permit. Registration of employee automobiles and assignment to available spaces is done through the Office of Safety and Security. Failure to comply with vehicle registration and parking regulations may result in fines and impounding of automobiles. Motorcycle and bicycle parking is authorized in designated areas only, and no motorcycles or bicycles may be parked inside campus buildings. For more information about parking, please refer to the Office of Safety and Security website.
