Overview


Flip helps you creatively share your voice, ideas, and more with your instructors and peers. You can either access a Flip assignment embedded in Canvas through a desktop or a mobile device and record and submit your video in a very few and simple steps.


Use a Desktop to Access a Flip Assignment

  • Login to your Canvas course.
  • Navigate to Assignments to locate the Flip assignment. (It is also possible that your instructor put the assignment in the Module area if the Assignment tab is not available from the course menu.)
  • Open your Flip assignment.

  • Once you've opened the Flip assignment, you'll see your instructor's topic. Follow the instructions and click Add Response when you're ready to record.

  • You need to allow Flip to access the mic and camera on your device. You might get this message when you record the first Flip video on your device.

  • After you open the Flip camera, you have two options to record yourself. You can access the options from the top right upper corner of the screen: record a video with only sound [1] or record your device's screen [2] by tapping Options at the top right corner.

  • Click the Record button to start recording. To confirm you're recording, Record button changes to Stop Record button . To stop recording, click Stop Record button . If you want to record more, click Record button again.
  • Click Next > to review and edit your video (trim, split, rearrange, add music or add more).
  • Edit your cover image, name, add a title, or attach a link. Then Post to Topic.

Tips

(lightbulb) Sticky note - at the top right, tap the sticky note to jot down key points and notes you want to remember. The note won't show up in your video.

(lightbulb) Mirror video - at the top right, tap Options and click Mirror Video to flip the camera to make sure any text you record in the video does not display backward.

(lightbulb) Show the topic - at the top left, tap the arrow to show instructions of this topic.

Use a Mobile Device to Access a Flip Assignment

We use iOS as an example in this instruction.

  • Download
    • Canvas student app
    • Flip app
  • Access the Flip assignment
    • Login Canvas student app.
    • Navigate to the Assignments.
    • Open the Flip assignment and click Launch External Tool.

  • Get started with Flip camera
    • Enable Flip to access the mic and camera on your mobile device. You might get this message when you record the first Flip video on your mobile device.
    • Redirect to the Flip app and click Open.

    • Click Add Response to open the Flip camera.
  • Before your record
    • You are able to choose your video's orientation. To create a video in portrait or landscape mode, rotate your mobile device.
    • In the Flip app, you can record yourself, record a video from your back camera by clicking at the top right of the camera or you can record a voice-only video by tapping Options [1] from the Effects Dock [1] and choosing Mic only [2].

  • Start Recording
    • Click Record button to start recording. To confirm you're recording, Record button changes to Stop Record button . To stop recording, click Stop Record button . If you want to record more, click Record button again.
    • Click > to review and edit your video (trim, split, rearrange, add music or add more).  Using the Flip app, you can mirror, and rotate your video.
    • Click > to add your cover image, title or attach a link. Then Post to Topic.

Tips

(lightbulb) Flash - at the top right of the camera, tap the Flash to turn the back camera's flashlight on or off to adjust the light of your video.

(lightbulb) Notes - tap Options from the Effects Dock to open the Notes. You can jot down key points and notes you want to remember. The notes won't show up in your video. It will show the topic instruction on your screen too.

Some camera 's features and their location may differ depending on whether you're on a phone or tablet and if your device is iOS or Android. 


Interact with Peers

  • To add a video comment: Click Record a video comment . Then, record a video and click submit.
  • To add a text comment: It is limited due to the Canvas integration. It is only available on iOS devices.

You will get this message if you try to leave a text comment through website-based Flip.
