Overview
Panopto enhances student learning by providing interactive tools such as Discussions, Notes, and Bookmarks, which students can add directly to any video. These features support active engagement, allowing learners to pause, reflect, and record key ideas or questions as they watch. They also help students review more efficiently by tagging important moments and participating in class conversations tied to specific timestamps. Encouraging students to use these tools leads to deeper understanding and more meaningful interaction with course content.
Panopto: Discussions, Notes and Bookmarks
Login
Login Panopto through web browser or app, using SPU login. [https://spu.hosted.panopto.com/ ] or alternatively, navigate to MySPU, then select SPU Online Services, choose Faculty & Staff, and click Panopto under the Academic section. (Screenshot below shows the Panopto login page for reference.)
If the instructor has enabled Panopto Videos in the Canvas course site, you can also access Panopto videos for your class there.
Discussion
Go to My Folder to access any recordings the instructor wants to share with students. Both instructors and students can use the Discussion tab on the left to add comments as they watch the video. These comments appear with a timestamp, allowing viewers to interact with specific moments in the recording and engage in meaningful, time-linked discussion.
Notes
Notes can be found on the left side, under Discussion. This feature allows learners to write notes directly connected to the video content. Each note is time-stamped, so when a note refers to a specific moment in the video, clicking it will automatically jump to that exact point for easy reference. Notes are private bydefault, but can be made public by changing the settings.
Bookmarks
Bookmarks are completely private. Instructors or students can mark specific points in the video that they want to revisit later. This is helpful for highlighting key moments during lecture review, preparing teaching notes, or returning to sections that may need clarification or editing.
Bookmarks also support efficient lesson planning by allowing instructors to quickly access important segments without rewatching the entire recording.
