720 direct care, minimum

Purpose

The goal is of Clinical Practicum is competent, safe practice as a new Advanced Practice Nurse.

Competencies

Faculty will be monitoring for progress toward competencies, which are as important if not more important than meeting minimum hours in internship.  Students who have not met competencies will not progress.

Progress will be monitored through:

• Typhon Evaluations
• Conversation with preceptors
• Site visit observation

Practice Hours

For DNP students seeking specialty certification a total of 1000 practice hours are required.

Direct Care

The direct care practicum hours must be with a preceptor in which direct patient care is provided to individuals, families and populations in the population-focused areas of APRN practice related to the population role and foci.  720 hours minimum

• Roughly 170 hours per quarter in Practicum
• 240 in Immersion

Indirect Care

In addition to the direct care hours, other mentored learning experiences assist the student to achieve DNP competencies as outlined in the AACN DNP Essentials and are a part of the 1000 practice hour requirement and completed as an immersion experience.

• 40 hours in Immersion
