The DNP Scholarly Project process is overseen by the DNP Project Coordinator who:

  • Serves as faculty liaison for students regarding DNP projects prior to students having a DNP Project Chair
  • Maintains repository of potential collaborative DNP projects
  • Works with Associate Dean to secure and assign Faculty Chairs and Faculty Readers

Each student will work with a DNP Scholarly Project Team. The team should include the student (or group of students if working on a group project), a faculty chair, a faculty reader, and a practice mentor.

A.  Student

  • Must successfully complete all preparatory coursework before beginning DNP Scholarly Project.
  • Will secure a DNP Scholarly Project with the guidance of the DNP Project Coordinator.
  • Will be self-directed and proactive in the pursuit of completing their DNP Scholarly Project.
  • Will communicate with Agency Mentor on a weekly basis report progress and ensure their project continues to meet the needs of the agency.
  • Will schedule regular meetings with Faculty Chair and Faculty Reader to share progress and seek guidance.
  • Will schedule regular meetings with Sciences Librarian and SPU Research, Reading, and Writing Studio.
  • ​Will request permission from their DNP Faculty Chair for registration in NUR 7996 DNP Scholarly Project and NUR 7997 DNP Scholarly Project Completion.

B. Faculty Chair

  • Must have doctoral preparation and be a member of the SPU faculty
  • Will provide counsel on student’s DNP Scholarly Project
  • Will lead Project Team review and approval of the DNP Scholarly Project proposal
  • Will review the DNP Scholarly Project written proposal and make suggested changes with final approval of proposal prior to implementation of the project. (NUR 7995)
  • Will attend the oral presentation of the proposal with written feedback for suggested changes in the proposal (Rubric in NUR 7995)
  • Will review IRB application and provide guidance and approval as faculty sponsor prior to project implementation.
  • Will enter permissions via Banner for NUR 7996 and 7997 registration
  • Will report to the Associate Dean for Graduate Nursing at the end of each quarter with the status of the student’s progress and plans for registration in the following quarter
  • Will provide counsel on student’s preparation, implementation, and evaluation/analysis of the DNP Scholarly Project
  • Will provide counsel and review the final DNP Scholarly Project deliverables
  • Will be present for the final DNP Scholarly Project presentation (typically at DNP Scholarship Day)
  • Will lead Project Team in adjudication of the final presentation and poster
  • Will meet on a regular basis with student to ensure satisfactory progress throughout the process
  • Will communicate in a timely manner
  • Will submit written feedback and maintain correspondence for the duration of the project

C. Faculty Reader

  • Must be a member of the SPU faculty (External or internal to SHS, includes adjunct faculty)
  • Must have masters preparation, earned doctorate not required
  • May serve as a content/methodology or systems expert to provide guidance in the DNP Scholarly Project
  • Read early drafts of proposal and final report, and provide feedback to student and chair as applicable
  • Read final drafts and provide feedback to student and chair
  • Approves, with chair, the DNP Scholarly Project proposal and final product
  • Will be present for the proposal presentation and the final DNP Scholarly Project presentation (typically at DNP Scholarship Day)
  • Will participate with other project team members in adjudication of the final presentation and poster
  • Will meet with student as needed to ensure satisfactory progress throughout the process
  • Will communicate in a timely manner
  • Will submit written feedback and maintain correspondence for the duration of the project as applicable

D. Practice Mentor

  • Identified by the student (or student group) in collaboration with the agency
  • Should be a member of the organization in which the project is being conducted and serves as the agency liaison
  • Is not required to be an RN or have doctoral preparation
  • Is not required to edit documents
  • Is a key stakeholder providing organizational support to the student for successful project implementation, data collection, and completion
  • Will provide feedback to the student regarding their project
  • Will communicate any concerns or issues with the DNP Scholarly Project Team Faculty Chair
  • Invited to be present for the final DNP Scholarly Project presentation (typically at DNP Scholarship Day)
